Chaanch/Mattha: The Indian Yogurt Drink
The Indian Yogurt Drink… if there is anything more perfect than this for this acute summer heat then it’s Aam Panna or nothing else.
With the sun beating down on me I am generally not in my best moods these days and am always craving for a glass of The Indian Yogurt Drink commonly known as Chaanch.
The apathy of the municipal department that cuts the supply of electricity for long hours in the afternoons is like adding fuel to the fire.
The heat often gets to my head, making me irritable and grumpy.
Sometimes I even suffer from heartburns and migraines and don’t want to eat anything throughout the day.
The only thing that gets me through these horrible Indian summer months is Chaanch/Mattha/The Indian Yogurt Drink.
The Indian Yogurt Drink can revitalize you, help keep you and your insides calm and hydrated, thus helping you to stay sane.
Here it is also known as Mattha. The Indian Yogurt Drink is classically made with buttermilk.
But you can also make it with yoghurt, adding water to it and thinning it out. People often make the mistake of comparing it with lassi by calling it namkeen lassi.
Lassi is another popular beverage of Punjab and is made with pure yoghurt.
In the case of Indian Yogurt Drink/chaanch/Mattha yoghurt is diluted with water making it lighter than Lassi.
I like to spice up my The Indian Yogurt Drink with a clove of grated garlic, roasted cumin and fresh mint.
It’s refreshing and a healthy drink as compared to the cokes and canned juices that floods the market and is definitely helps beat the peak summer heat.
