Know Your Flaxseed

Flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, are small, brown, tan or golden-coloured seeds. Flax is one of the richest sources of plant-based acids. They are a great source of dietary fibre; minerals like manganese, thiamine and magnesium; and plant-based protein. They also help make Skin and Hair Healthy. High in Antioxidants (Lignans), it has the ability to promote and support digestive health.

There are many great ways to add these super seeds into your diet, including adding them to homemade muffins, breads and cookies.

How Much Flaxseed Should You Eat A Day?

Have approximately two to three tablespoons daily for proper dietary flaxseed supplementation. You might want to use more or less depending on your goals. You can store your flaxseeds (ground or whole) in an opaque container in the fridge or freezer. Coarsely ground flax seeds can be stored at room temperature for up to 10 months, without spoilage or loss of the omega-3 fatty acid.

Flaxseed boosts heart health and may enhance vision. You can find it in health/food/grocery stores. Enjoying this smoothie also helps you meet your daily calcium needs.

Baking And Cooking With Flaxseeds:

One of the most common questions regarding the use of flaxseeds in recipes is whether baking has any effect on flax’s omega-3 fatty acids. You can bake flaxseeds at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for about three hours and the omega-3s (ALA) in flaxseeds will remain stable.

Tips For Including Flaxseeds In Recipes:

  • Add 1–3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed to a morning smoothie. Flaxseeds absorb lots of liquid so add plenty of water or almond/coconut milk.
  • Mix a tablespoon of ground flaxseed in with yoghurt with some raw honey.
  • Use the flaxseeds as a garnish on your baked breads or bake ground flaxseeds into muffins, cookies and breads.
  • Add ground flaxseed to homemade sprouts.
  • You can mix the flaxseed with water and use as an egg substitute in vegetarian/vegan recipes.
