This masala spice blend is also known as kanda lasun masala or Goda Masala powder.

This aromatic masala blend originates from the state of Maharashtra in India. It is made with a combination of spices like coriander seeds, cumin seeds, cloves, black peppercorns, cinnamon sticks, and cardamom pods.

These aromatic spices are dry roasted, cooled and ground to make the masala powder.

Ingredients of Maharashtrian Goda Masala

  • 4 Cups coriander seeds
  • 1 cup dry coconut
  • ½ cup white sesame seeds 
  • ½ cup black sesame seeds
  • ¼ cup cumin seeds
  • 4-5 tsp black cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp asafoetida (heeng)
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon (broken into tiny pieces)
  • 3-4 Cloves
  • 1 Black cardamom (seeds only)
  • 3 Dry red chilies
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste 
  • 1 tbsp oil

Instructions to Make Maharashtrian Goda Masala

  1. Oil should be heated before roasting all ingredients except coconut and coriander seeds. 
  2. Separate and keep aside. Remove from heat and allow to cool. 
  3. Coconut and coriander seeds should be roasted separately without oil. Let it cool.
  4. Put all these items in a blender and grind them together.
  5. Store it in an airtight container once it has cooled.
