Ingredients
- 6 whole star anise pods
- 1 1/2 tsp whole cloves (or 1 1/4 tsp ground)
- 1 cinnamon stick (3 inches long ) or two tbsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp fennel seeds
- 2 tsp Szechuan peppercorns ( or sub 3 teaspoons regular peppercorns)
Instructions
- Dry whole spices can be toasted in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Using a spice grinder, grind all ingredients until smooth.
- Take a deep breath and smell the goodness.
- For the best flavor, store in an airtight spice jar and use within six months.
- This recipe makes ¼ cup of Chinese Five Spice Powder.
Recipe Notes
In order to create a more fragrant, intense flavor, lightly toast the seeds/pods in a dry skillet.
You could substitute 1 tablespoon anise seeds in a pinch, but the flavor won’t be as strong.
