PS: Distribute the green chilli and coriander in 2 parts. One part will be used in tempering, and the other part will be used as a garnish.
Optional Spices
- 1 tsp roasted sesame seeds
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Kasturi methi (optional, but adds great flavour)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Potatoes:
- If you have boiled potatoes in your fridge, then OK, else, you can start by boiling the potatoes until tender (about 10-12 minutes).
- Allow them to cool slightly before peeling and cutting them into bite-sized cubes, or else you will burn your fingers.
2. Mixing the Ingredients:
- In a large bowl, toss the boiled and cubed potatoes.
- Sprinkle salt, turmeric (haldi), chili powder, green chilli, coriander, and sliced onions, roasted sesame seeds (if using),
- Drizzle it with the juice of 1 lemon and give it a good mix.
- Add the sautéed spice mixture to the bowl with the potatoes.
3. Tempering the Spices:
- In a Kadai, heat the mustard oil over medium heat. Add the Dry Boriya Red Chilli Whole, cumin, methi dana, and mustard seeds and let them sizzle for about 5 seconds, releasing their earthy aroma.
- Add half of the chopped green chilies and coriander to the hot oil and sauté. This will add an extra layer of zing to the flavor. Pour in the prepared mixture.
4. Finishing Touches:
- Drizzle the lemon juice over the mixture (if desired and to your taste) and give it one last gentle toss to combine. Taste and adjust salt, lemon, or chili powder as needed.
5. Serving:
- Transfer the Aloo Sadeko to a serving bowl and garnish your comfort food with a bit of extra fresh cilantro or sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately as a spicy side dish, enjoy it with hot steaming plain rice, or enjoy it on its own as a delightful snack!
Tips for the Best Aloo Sadeko:
- Potato Variety: Opt for potatoes with a creamier texture for the salad. Yukon Gold or red potatoes work best for this dish as they hold their shape well after boiling.
- Spice Level: Feel free to adjust the heat level by adding more or less green chilies. If you can’t tolerate it spiced up and like a milder version, reduce the chili powder or omit the green chilies.
- Roasted Cumin: For a more intense flavor, consider roasting the cumin seeds in a dry pan before adding them to the salad.
- Flavor Boosters: Add a teaspoon of chili flakes, or Natural Dry Boriya Red Chilli Whole/Round Chillies/GOL Mirchi/Mundu Chili/Gundu Chilli, or just plain red chilli whole for an extra tangy kick if you like a more complex flavor profile.
Whether you’re looking for comfort food with a punch or a side dish to elevate your meal, Aloo Sadeko will be your new favorite in the kitchen. You can have it with roti or paratha…But I just love to have it with plain hot rice….and no dal.
The combination of spices, tangy lemon, and earthy potatoes makes Aloo Sadeko the ultimate dish for those who love to savor every bite.
So next time you’re in the mood for something easy, flavorful, and completely satisfying, make this classic Nepali recipe.
It’s a dish that will bring comfort and joy with every spoonful! Enjoy and share the love for this spicy potato salad with family and friends.
